| This was a workshop held at the glass department at Tyler University. To "rush" the cooling cycle the pieces were tipped up before removing them from the kiln. It is preferable to keep the lid closed until the class cools on its own but sometimes that luxury isn't always possible. This is what I do when I must rush the cycle: After the firing temperature of the paint has been achieved I'll open the lid and crash the temperature down to 1000° F. Then I keep the lid closed until the temperature drops to 500° F. At this point I'll crack the lid and prop it with a 1" kiln stilt, avoiding drafts. After the temperature drops below 150° F I'll open the lid all the way. |
